3 Key Ways to Prepare for Hurricane Season

3 Key Ways to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predict that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1st and lasts through November 30th, will be “above normal.” So, what does this mean?

It means that an increase in “named” storms this season may lead to an increase in hurricanes, which may in turn lead to a rise in major hurricanes.

At the beginning of hurricane season in 2023 experts projected the development of up to 21 named storms (storms having windspeeds of 39 miles per hour or higher). This year forecasters say that up to as many as 25 storms may be strong enough to receive names. This forecast comes with a certainty of 85 percent, per NOAA.

Of the named storms forecast for this season, between 8 and 13 are predicted to develop into hurricanes (having windspeeds of 74 miles per hour or higher). Of those hurricanes, as many as 7 are expected to develop into major hurricanes (categories 3, 4, or 5 having windspeeds of 111 miles per hour or higher). That figure surpasses last year’s projection of up to 5 major hurricanes.

So, how do you prepare for this, or any, hurricane season? Consider these three crucial ways to help keep you and your family safe.

Plan for Where to Go

If authorities were to advise you to evacuate your home, have a plan for where to go. This could be to the safety of a pre-designated shelter, to the home of a member of your family, or to the residence of a friend.

It’s also important to be aware of your state’s evacuation routes and zones, which you can check out on the emergency management websites of your county and state.

Plan for What to Take

In the event that you must evacuate your home, be prepared ahead of time with the necessities that you should take with you—essentially an emergency supply kit. According to Ready.gov, which is a national campaign to promote emergency preparedness, your kit should include items like water for drinking and sanitation, non-perishable foods like canned goods (along with a can opener), infant formula and diapers, a battery-powered radio and flashlight (with extra batteries), a first aid kit, and your cell phone with its charger.

Other essentials to carry are personal hygiene items and hand sanitizer, as well as pet food, sleeping bags, changes of clothes, cash (or traveler’s checks), and important documents like birth certificates and insurance policies.

Plan for How to Get Information and Updates

It’s vitally important to stay informed before, during, and after a hurricane or other type of extreme weather event. Be sure to stay connected to your local news outlets to learn about the latest weather developments. A majority of jurisdictions send text messages to smart phones, as well as email alerts, to warn residents of impending extreme weather and to provide status updates. You can enroll to receive these notifications. Depending on where you live, your area may even use outdoor sirens to warn of imminent danger.
