There are many 55 plus communities in the United States. Florida is the leader here with more than 300 such housing complexes. The “Sun Cities” are well known in the USA and “The Villages” near Orlando in Florida. These are real cities for young at heart 55 plus residents. But what exactly does that mean? Can you only live there if you are over 55 years old? And what about visiting children, grandchildren etc.? Are they not allowed to spend the holidays in the facility?
“55 plus community” or “Adult Community” usually requires that at least 80% of the residents are 55 years and older. If you move in as a couple, at least one person in the household must be 55 years and older. However, the rules can vary depending on the community and owner communities. Visiting children or grandchildren are allowed. However many times there are restrictions on the duration of the visit. So before buying a home in a 55+ community, you should inquire exactly which rules have to be observed.
