4 Tips to Make a Small Space Look Larger Before You Sell

If your home is on the smaller side, your interiors don’t have to look like it. Consider these four tips to help enhance the appearance of spaciousness inside your home before you put it on the market.

For Furniture

Tip #1. Maximize the Use of Mirrors

It’s all about smoke and mirrors. As a result of their reflective nature, mirrors can bounce light around a room and make it appear more bright, airy, open, and spacious. Consider leaning an oversized mirror against a wall to deemphasize the wall and create the illusion of a space that continues.

Tip #2. Practice Minimalism

Be a minimalist to the max. Before your home hits the market, it’s wise to practice minimalism with your furnishings. Overpopulating your interiors with furniture can eat up floor space and visually shrink your rooms. Examine each room of your home, and if you identify furniture that no longer serves a purpose, or if you can consolidate furnishings to only those you need, place the unnecessary pieces into storage while your home is listed.

For Color Schemes

Tip #3. Go for a Neutral, Monochromatic Look

Consistency can bring synchronicity. Neutral colors like beige, grey, or greige (a combo of grey and beige) are smart paint color choices for home interiors, especially for smaller homes, because they help create a bright and airy appearance, which can make spaces feel larger. If you plan to give your interiors a fresh coat of paint, it’s best to use your color of choice consistently throughout your home. Monochromatic color schemes help create a cohesive appearance. This doesn’t necessarily mean that every space in your home must be painted the same color. Rather, a foundation color—one that’s used primarily—can be accompanied by a pigment that’s complementary.

Avoid painting your interiors using high-contrast colors. Doing so can make your spaces appear choppy because the drastic changes in pigments create visual separation. It’s okay, however, to use home accessories like throw pillows and wall art to introduce a pop of color for added interest.

For Flooring

Tip #4. Unify Your Spaces

Maintain a united front. If you plan to replace flooring in your home ahead of putting your residence on the market, consider using the same material to cover an entire level. A continuous material that isn’t interrupted by surface changes can unify your spaces and make them feel larger. For example, if you want to install hardwood flooring in your entry, carry that material to surrounding rooms, as much as makes functional and cosmetic sense, to achieve a look that unifies your interiors and keeps them from feeling disjointed. If a hardwood entry were to abruptly change to carpet or ceramic tile a few feet away, the difference in surfaces would break the visual flow.
