Labor Force and Employment

In December 2023 unemployment in Collier County was 3.1 percent, according to research performed by Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).

Although this is a slight uptick of 0.1 percentage point from the month prior, it is substantially lower than the U.S. national average, which was 3.7 percent in December 2023—per figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Taxable Sales

State and local municipalities raise revenue through sales tax. Take a look at these snapshots of taxable sales figures for Collier County, and other parts of Southwest Florida:

Seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales in Collier County amounted to $1.017 billion in October 2023, per FGCU. This is a 5 percent decline from the month prior.
In Lee County the seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales totaled $1.723 billion in October 2023. This is a dip of 1 percentage point from September 2023.

Tourist Tax Revenues

In November 2023, Collier County’s seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues totaled $4.2 million. That’s 20 percent higher than the same month in the previous year.
Seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues in Lee County were $3.4 million in November 2023—7 percent higher than November 2022.
In coastal counties, the seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues amounted to $8.2 million in November 2023. That’s an increase of 11 percent from November 2022.

Airport Passenger Activity

According to researchers at FGCU, airport passenger traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) totaled 940,987 in December 2023. That’s 27 percent higher than December 2022.
