Naples Pier Receives $1M Donation Toward Reconstruction

The iconic Naples Pier is one step closer toward repairs and reconstruction after the severe impacts of Hurricane Ian in 2022 devastated the pier and struck other parts of Southwest Florida.

Efforts to reconstruct the landmark received a $1 million donation from the Norris-Gaynor Foundation, according to an announcement by a city spokesperson in late December—the Naples Daily News reported.

The Norris-Gaynor Foundation is a prominent organization that has supported pier reconstruction efforts in years past. In 1960, when Hurricane Donna decimated the landmark, husband and wife Lester and Dellora Norris funded its entire reconstruction.

The donation, however, will cover only a fraction of reconstruction costs, according to city officials who project that redesign and reconstruction will run $20 million. Design plans for the pier were approved by the Naples City Council in October 2023.

“We are immensely grateful for their support,” wrote Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann of the Norris-Gaynor Foundation in a Dec. 19 press release. Heitmann said that the organization’s “generous contribution” will be crucial to reconstruction efforts.

Fundraising to rebuild Naples Pier is ongoing. If you would like to contribute, the Collier Community Foundation is accepting donations via the Naples Pier Fund. The foundation sends the funds to assist the City of Naples’ reconstruction efforts, and overages will be placed in an endowment to be used for any subsequent maintenance and enhancements to the pier.

Naples Pier, which was originally constructed in 1888, has sustained impacts from six hurricanes throughout its existence, including ones in 1910, 1926, 1944, 1960, in 2017 by Hurricane Irma, and most recently in 2022 by Hurricane Ian.

Ian was a Category 5 hurricane that caused major damage to about 460 feet of the pier, including a 140-foot stretch that supported the shelter at the pier’s end, as well as damage to the midsection of the pier that hallowed out the shelter, concessions, and storage facilities located there.
