    Moorings History

    Moorings was originally purchased in 1957 for $1.5 million. The community has grown exponentially to reach its current 1,300-acre size – but long before it was ever developed, the area was a swampy marshland originally surveyed by Walter Halderman and General John S. Williams. In the 1880s, the pair built homes on the beach, hired a firm from Fort Myers to help them build a pier, and laid out plans to turn the property into a thriving tourist destination.
