Vanderbilt Beach History
In the early 1950s, a hydraulic dredge opened the channel from Wiggins Pass to the Vanderbilt intercanal area – and that passageway brought saltwater into the backwater areas. Quite a bit of dredging was required to create the first solid, buildable property, but when it was complete. The finger canals and streets were constructed in the mid-1950s, but until the 1970s, few people actually lived in the community. However, when J.B. Conners, the land development pioneer who owned the property, chose to name it Vanderbilt Beach to convey a sense of wealth and privilege, it officially got its start with high-end luxury homes at the bay and along the channels, eventually adding high-rise luxury condos to the mix.
