Endangered Orangutans to Arrive at Naples Zoo
If you’ve never seen an orangutan in person, you’ll be able to very soon. This August, Naples Zoo will roll out the red carpet for a family of four of these great apes for the very first time in its 50 years of existence. You’ll be able to see this fascinating family up-close-and-personal in their habitat through two observation windows, the zoo promises.
Here’s more about what you can expect to see when you visit these intelligent primates.
Look Who’s Coming to Town
On its website, Naples Zoo explains the familial relationship between these Bornean orangutans, which include:
- DeeDee, a 43-year-old mother
- RanDee, 14 years old (son of DeeDee)
- Dira, 5 years old (daughter of DeeDee)
- Riplee, 2 years old (son of RanDee)
(Image to the right is only a depiction, and not the actual apes).
Details About Their New Home
The apes, which are being re-homed from Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park, will reside in a habitat that includes an enclosure that’s intermingled with banyan trees—enabling these apes to climb, since the trees send vertical roots from their branches that allow the trees to expand horizontally. Orangutans spend a majority of their time in trees.
Why Are Orangutans an Endangered Species?
In a short span of 40 years the population of orangutans in the country of Borneo has plummeted by more than 50 percent, Naples Zoo informs. But this trend isn’t isolated to Borneo. Indonesia and Malaysia have seen dropping numbers of orangutans across all species.
The cause of the shrinking population of this tropical primate is primarily due to deforestation, in which their natural forest environments are turned into plantations for palm oil—a vegetable oil that’s used in a variety of foods, items for the home, and cosmetics, to name a few.
