Labor Force and Employment

In February 2024 unemployment in Collier County ticked upward by 0.2 percent from the previous month, reaching 3.2 percent, according to figures from Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Although it’s an increase, this figure is still sizably lower than the U.S. national average, which was 3.9 percent in February 2024, per data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

State and local municipalities raise revenue through sales tax. Take a look at these snapshots of taxable sales figures for Collier County, and other portions of Southwest Florida:

  • According to FGCU’s calculations, seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales in Collier County amounted to $1.024 billion in January 2024. It’s a 3-percent dip from December 2023 (the month prior).

  • In Lee County the seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales totaled $1.690 billion in January 2024. That’s 2 percent down from the previous month.

                         Tourist Tax Revenues

  • In January 2024, Collier County’s seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues were $4.0 million. That’s 18 percent higher than the same time last year.
  • Seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues in Lee County totaled $3.4 million in January 2024—16 percent over January 2023.
  • In coastal counties, the seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues were $8.3 million in January 2024. That’s 16 percent above January 2023.


                                                                     Airport Passenger Activity

  • Airport passenger traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) amounted to 942,329 in February 2024. That’s a 26 percent increase from February 2023, per research performed by FGCU.
