Labor Force and Employment


According to research performed by Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), unemployment in Collier County was 3.1 percent in December 2023. This figure is significantly lower than the U.S. national average, which sat at 3.7 percent in December 2023, as well as in January 2024, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (January 2024 unemployment data for Collier County was not yet available at the time of this writing). 


 

                                                                                  Taxable Sales

State and local municipalities raise revenue through sales tax. Here is a look at snapshots of taxable sales figures for Collier County, and other parts of Southwest Florida:

  • Seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales in Collier County totaled $1.048 billion in December 2023, according to FGCU. That is an increase of 1 percent since November 2023.

 

  • In Lee County the seasonally-adjusted real taxable sales amounted to $1.704 billion in December 2023—up 3 percent from the previous month.

                       Tourist Tax Revenues


  • In December 2023, Collier County’s seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues were $3.8 million. That’s a 15 percent increase from December 2022.
  • Seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues in Lee County totaled $3.3 million in December 2023—13 percent higher than December 2022.
  • In coastal counties, the seasonally-adjusted real tourist tax revenues were $7.8 million in December 2023. That’s 13 percent above December 2022.

 

                                                                    Airport Passenger Activity


  • Researchers at FGCU report that airport passenger traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) totaled 916,373 in January 2024—19 percent over January 2023.
