Fact #1: The second-oldest house in Naples is:

The Naples residence known today as Palm Cottage is the second-oldest home in the city. The property was originally designed to function as a rental home and an overflow for guests of the Naples Hotel. The home eventually got its name from Walter O. Parmer after he purchased it in 1916. Palm Cottage currently functions as a historic house museum, as well as the headquarters for the Naples Historical Society.


Fact #2: The first president of the Naples Orchid Society was:

Former Naples Mayor Lloyd Easterling. In case you didn’t know, orchids are a pretty big deal in Naples. Easterling was unanimously elected by the Naples Orchid Society’s nominating committee during the organization’s first meeting in May 1963.

Fact #3: Naples has the first-ever National Preserve created by the National Park Service, which is:

Big Cypress National Preserve. According to the National Park Service, the preserve encompasses more than 729,000 acres of swamp land containing plant communities that are inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife. Among them is the Florida panther, which is an endangered species. You can hunt game and ride off-road vehicles at the preserve, since it’s not a national park.

Fact #4: Pink Flamingos used to be plentiful in:

The Florida Everglades. Over the years this beautiful bird with its impressive pink plumage has been hunted for its unique feathers—and its eggs, making it a seldomly seen delight in its natural habitat.

Fact #5: The largest of the Ten Thousand Islands is:

Marco—which is a barrier island that’s offshore from Naples. A barrier island is a land mass created by the movement of ocean tides and waves parallel to a mainland coast. These islands can help protect mainland coastlines and wetlands during extreme weather, like tropical storms and hurricanes. Marco Island’s coastline is approximately four miles long.
