5 Types of Hurricane Shutters: Which is Best for Your Home?
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30th and experts at NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, forecast that this season will produce “above normal” hurricane activity. Hurricane force winds can produce flying debris that can penetrate the windows of your home. So, how can you protect them? Consider these five types of hurricane shutters.

Type #1: Bahama Hurricane Shutters
These types of shutters are attached above the windows of your home at a 45-degree angle and are typically comprised of impact-resistant aluminum. Bahama hurricane shutters, which are also referred to as Bermuda shutters, open and close with relative ease. They’re a popular choice for homes with tropical and Mediterranean vibes, which are characteristic of our region, and are available in an assortment of styles and colors that can complement your home.
Type #2: Colonial Hurricane Shutters
Colonial hurricane shutters frame windows on either side and swing open and closed on hinges. Some colonial-style shutters are cosmetic and are only intended to beautify a home. They’re affixed to the structure and do not swing in to shield windows. Colonial hurricane shutters, however, are for both aesthetics and function.

Type #3: Accordion Hurricane Shutters
This style of hurricane shutter functions just as its name implies. Similar to the motion of an accordion, a shutter on each side of a window collapses into itself when it’s not in use. When protection is needed, each shutter can expand by being pulled along a horizontal track that allows them to meet at the center of the window.

Type #4: Panel Hurricane Shutters
Panel hurricane shutters are not permanently affixed to a house, so they must be installed before a hurricane and removed and stored away when they’re not being used. These shutters are corrugated and are available in steel, aluminum, and polycarbonate, which is a clear material that allows you to see out of a window after a panel is installed.
Type #5: Roll-Up Hurricane Shutters
This style of hurricane shutter is installed above your windows inside of its own housing. The shutters are rolled up when they’re not in use and rolled down when needed via a manual crank, or by electric motor.
Which is Best for Your Home?
When deciding on which type of hurricane shutter is best for your home, consider these criteria:
-
-
- Durability — Hurricane shutters may be comprised of steel, aluminum, or polycarbonate. Steel is typically the strongest. Be sure that your shutters come with a warranty. A majority of manufacturers back up their product for as many as 10 years, but this varies from company to company.
-
-
-
- Ease of Use — When it comes to roll-up hurricane shutters you may consider investing in ones that operate using a hand crank or opt for ones that are motorized. if you decide to purchase panel hurricane shutters, be mindful that they will have to be installed before a hurricane strikes and removed and stored away when they’re not required.
-
-
-
- Appearance — As necessary as hurricane shutters can be, their ability to complement the appearance of your home may also be an important consideration for you. You might think about investing in Bahama or colonial shutters, each of which is available in an assortment of colors. Choose a design and color that best suits the vibe of your residence.
